Medium to large-sized, fast-growing native tree often used for hedging. As a hedging plant it retains its dead leaves in the same way as beech. Grey trunk with ovate serrated ribbed leaves. In Old English the name 'horn' refers to its' hard wood, 'beam' meaning tree. Suitable for heavy, wet soils where beech will not grow. Prefers sun or partial shade. Makes a good avenue tree and is often used for pleaching.
